NORTH MIAMI BEACH YOUTH CENTER
In response to the posing threat of sea level rise in South Florida, many buildings have to adapt to combat this. This is a serious threat and it is important for communities in these affected areas to still provide desireble spaces for gathering. Our site is located in the North Miami beach area. This area of Miami has noticed an increase in population which has thus created an increased need for community and public spaces. We were asked to design a Youth Center with certain programming requirements (gymnasium hall, table tennis area, juice bar, skate shop, and classrooms). The site is at a very appealing location, directly across from the North Beach Oceanside Park. Our design proposal strives to connect the interior programs to the surrounding nature, estentially blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. The design also includes a variety of programming, with the hope of bringing a diverse group of people together. Due to the location being directly west of the ocean, we must anticpate rising tides and future flooding onto the site. We address this challenge by elevating our ground floor above the NOAA sea level projections. Our center also has the ability to be 100% passively cooled. We strived to make an entirely green building with PV panels, green roofs, green walls, operable windows, and a variety of shading systems.
